Standard drinks do? Search me!

When G4S came to us for help organising an event they had booked a room at the OGH so the date, just weeks away, and the venue had already been decided.

The aim of the event was to herald the beginning of a new chapter in G4S history. Having recently acquired Guernsey Air Conditioning the company has reached an impressive size, more than 250 employees, and offers a range of services much wider than the air conditioning and airport security its component parts were best known for. Our job was to inject some personality and take the event from classic corporate to memorable meet-up.

A brainstorm at Orchard Towers yielded two bright ideas to set this event apart. First, there should be no long speeches but instead a short DVD which succinctly explained the vast range of services on offer. Second, a talking point would be created in the form of an airport security arch as an entrance to the event.

The DVD was filmed during one day by Channel Television (I even made a cameo appearance) and then editing took place with input from Orchard and G4S. It had the desired effect and most guests came away from the evening having been surprised by the number of services on offer.

The security arch, complete with security officer, was also a hit. From the moment it was installed hotel staff were eager to give it a trial run and I heard one remark “That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in the Regency. . . and I’ve seen a race car in there!” Guests commented that it was a great talking point and a bit of fun that helped create a point of difference for the evening from other drinks events.

Looking forward to 2012

Despite its unfortunate associations with the Mayan calendar, at Orchard we are really looking forward to 2012. It looks set to be another year of innovation in our fast moving sector, with on-line PR where most of the real progress will be made. The team at Orchard have made some predictions, resolutions and observations about what they think the next year will hold for us.

Steve: 2012 will be a year when marketing budgets face a further squeeze as corporate belts are tightened further; we’ll have to work even harder to demonstrate the value that good PR delivered by professional practitioners can add in difficult economic times.

Harry: I’m looking forward to studying towards my CIPR Diploma in 2012. I’ll be dusting off my PR books and getting in the swing of writing essays again!

Brooke: Next year I am looking forward to some more fab events launching some new brands (shhhh can’t tell you about them yet!) into Guernsey and Guernsey Festival is going to rock, I just know it is going to feature in my PR highlights for 2012.  Oh did I mention I am getting married… I think my wedding is going to be a pretty big personal PR event for me!!

Pieter: I am looking forward to gaining more experience with the team at Orchard, assisting them with a wide variety of tasks and projects and putting my media skills to good use whenever I can.

Chloe: I am desperate to get started on a PR qualification! I am currently about half way to getting a degree with the Open University which I am really enjoying. I’m really looking forward to taking on something industry specific though and building on the knowledge that I have acquired as an account executive.

Emma: I am looking forward to conducting more media and presentation skills training. I think 2012 will also be the year that our clients will really get to grips with how the media has changed. By their nature, professional services firms are not known for being early adopters but the wave of proof demonstrating how useful social media is can no longer be ignored. I am looking forward to helping them get the best out of these new communication channels.

So there you have it – 2012 will be about big events, the wedding of the year, developing new skills and showing clients that PR delivers value for money. We expect it’s going to be a busy year.

It’s been a bumper year in the Orchard…

So – that was 2011. With just a couple of short weeks to the end of another hectic year in PR it’s time to step back and take stock of 2011; the highs, lows and downright crazies; and give you a hint at the biggest events of the year in Orchard’s world.

First up the team have been thinking about their personal experiences, and we’ll be finishing off the year with more posts on our PR industry highlights (and lowlights) and a look forward to 2012.

So what have the best bits of 2011 been for Orchard PR?

Brooke: The Waitrose branch openings, all five of them, were a PR highlight for me.  The stakeholder parties that we organised were hard work but brilliant fun – seeing The Farmhouse and La Mare Vineyards transformed and hundreds of eager guests arriving to find bespoke Guernsey and Jersey themed cocktails and Heston and Delia inspired food creations was amazing.

Steve: I’ve enjoyed working with some well-known grandmasters of the media such as Alastair Stewart and Robert Peston, but also some relatively unknown, yet impressive, journalists in the trade press and local media.

Chloe: I can’t believe I have only been at Orchard nine months, so many great things have happened. The one day that particularly stands out is the one I just could not stop grinning – I was so excited when I got to type “Conde Nast” into my contacts.

Pieter: Filming and editing the videos for the Foster Care Campaign was the highlight for me. It is such a worthwhile project and I was pleased to be able to use my skills to be help young people in Guernsey find a foster family.

Harry: Meeting Judge Jules at Fusion Nightclub! I co-ordinated all of his media interviews and he was really friendly, even letting Chloe and I have a photo taken with him. His set was amazing and the Orchard PR crew partied until the Fusion house lights came on.

Catherine: Personally, achieving a distinction for my CIPR Advanced Certificate and being promoted to senior account executive were my best moments of 2011. I think they show that I’ve made some pretty big strides in my PR career this year.

Emma: The Orchard team won six new clients in the space of two months near the end of the year which just shows that, even in uncertain economic times, people recognise the need to use specialists in communications to make their voices heard by the right people.

Come back to the Orchard Blog tomorrow for our top PR industry highlights of 2011.

Three awards and five stars for the OGH in Guernsey

Earlier this year the Orchard team was involved in a marketing campaign for one of Guernsey’s best hotels, the Old Government House Hotel. Consultant Emma Anderson and account executive Catherine Le Prevost led the project.

The brief:

Orchard began working with the Old Government House Hotel & Spa in February 2011 following their record breaking win at the Guernsey Awards for Achievement. The OGH was the only business ever to scoop three awards, winning Guernsey Business of the Year, Best Large Business and the Excellence in Training Award.

Orchard PR was approached to maximise the impact of this achievement and to keep up the momentum generated by the awards with PR activity, events and greater profile in the Channel Islands’ media targeting corporate bookers, business customers and holiday makers.

The hotel was also keen to promote their services to islanders with The Governor’s Restaurant and Brasserie a particular focus.

The experience:

A campaign strategy was quickly built to focus most of the ‘news agenda’ on the professionalism of the business and its staff. Interviews, news releases and articles were generated targeting Channel Islands’ business publications and achieved good results, placing the hotel in front of the islands’ corporate community.

A key element of the campaign also acknowledged the work that goes into running an award winning hotel. This included highlighting the senior promotions of two members of the restaurant team which was reported widely by the Guernsey and Channel Islands’ business media. The Hotel also aimed to reach those looking to pursue a career within the hospitality industry by offering Guernsey students the chance to experience life working in a busy hotel shadowing members of the team as they conducted their daily duties.

Other events were more consumer-focused and centred on a mix of cocktails, cakes and canapés. To commemorate the Hotel’s awards the team created a new drink called The OGH Achiever’s Cocktail and a new trio of Achiever’s Canapés which went down a treat at a special party organised to celebrate the Hotel’s success. Photographs from the event were featured in a spread in a Guernsey lifestyle magazine. The launch of the exclusive cocktail also attracted coverage from various media outlets and highlighted again the Hotel’s recent success at the Awards for Achievement.

Ahead of Prince William’s wedding to Catherine Middleton, the OGH celebrated the Royal couple’s nuptials with a unique take on the traditional tea party hosting a special Royal Wedding Street Party. Attendees were invited to paint their own commemorative mugs and feasted on a range of mini British classics including toad in the hole and trifles.

The Hotel’s street party placed the establishment at the forefront of Guernsey businesses getting into the spirit of the Royal Wedding celebrations. A journalist and photographer from the Guernsey Press attended the event and the party achieved excellent coverage in the build-up to the nuptials.

The outcome:

In the two months following the award wins Orchard PR generated 25 pieces of media coverage in the Guernsey, Jersey and Channel Islands business media targeting the primary audiences of the Hotel. This resulted in a significantly raised profile for key team members and the services the hotel provides. The Hotel’s raised profile was reinforced last month when the OGH received a five star rating from Visit Guernsey – the first hotel in Guernsey to achieve this.

Welcoming Waitrose to the Channel Islands

‘Every pr should spend time working in the press office of a supermarket’, Ed Watson ex-Asda PR, now at Debenhams (as quoted in Corpcomms magazine)

The brief: We began working with Waitrose last summer following their  successful purchase of five shops in the Channel Islands. Waitrose displayed a refreshing and honest approach to their knowledge of the Channel Islands; they had undertaken extensive research before purchasing their shops but knew that the Channel Islands could not be treated as another region of England. They understood that to have a successful communications campaign they needed to engage the people that lived and worked in the islands. That is where Orchard came in…

We were taken on to perform a local press office function for the supermarket and to be the company’s eyes and ears in the islands in the lead up to the new branch openings.

Orchard PR was also tasked with the management of two stakeholder events; both to take place the night before the first branch opened in each island. The events were to mark the company’s arrival in the islands, and to celebrate the culmination of all the hard work undertaken to get the branches open. We wanted to get the great and good of the islands to come to the events to meet the movers and shakers of Waitrose.

The experience: A few highlights of our Waitrose journey so far…

We have:

  • Met hundreds of local producers, everything from mushroom growers, to cider makers and we even got to taste some wonderful sticky toffee pudding
  • Become so familiar with the aisles of the supermarkets that we have begun dreaming about them
  • Delivered lavender sugar (yes we do know what it is) and carrot cake to some very enthusiastic journalists across the islands
  • Seen a supermarket as you will never see it again – every product, Partner and trolley exactly in their place
  • Welcomed loads of media (very early in the morning!) into the new branches and proudly given them a tour
  • Enjoyed a cup of coffee with Mr Waitrose himself aka Managing Director, Mark Price (btw he takes it black with no sugar)
  • Dealt with the inevitable issues that a big boy like Waitrose faces when he decides to move into a small place like Guernsey or Jersey, there will always be some…
  • Commissioned flower arrangements out of fruit and veg and designed cocktail names to reflect our beloved Channel Islands
  • Transformed La Mare Wine Estate, Jersey and The Farmhouse, Guernsey (both super venues, highly recommended) into chic cocktail parties fit for Heston or Delia
  • Greeted loads of Guernsey and Jersey folk and happily sent them on their way with goody bags full of Waitrose treats

We’ve got more photos of the Waitrose launch events in our gallery.

The outcome: ….well we are not finished yet, there are still two stores to open – Red Houses in Jersey and Admiral Park in Guernsey – later this month and next.

To date we have generated over 200 pieces of coverage, including 11 front pages which we are pretty pleased with.

While we know we have played only a small role in the arrival of Waitrose in the Channel Islands, we think that the people of Guernsey and Jersey now have a good understanding of the Waitrose way and we have really enjoyed helping communicate that message.

Watch this space to see where the Waitrose journey takes Orchard PR next…

Guernsey Funds Forum rated a success

Brief

Guernsey Finance regularly hosts industry events in London to promote the island as a finance centre. The delegates are drawn from the City, bringing high level expertise, and high expectations, to proceedings.

Orchard Events was asked to manage the entire organisation and logistics for the Guernsey Funds Forum, the latest in this series of events, at the Grange St Paul’s Hotel in London. This included services such as venue liaison, delegate bookings, catering, speaker briefings, co-ordination of the exhibition, sales of sponsorship packages and liaison with sponsors.

Concept

The half-day conference and exhibition saw Guernsey and UK funds experts tackling the key issues facing the investment funds industry at the time of the British General Election and beyond. The event was moderated with typical flair by ITV news journalist Alastair Stewart OBE and incorporated sessions on ‘Transparency’ featuring Bridget Barker from Macfarlanes, ‘Distribution’ with Scott Cochrane of Herbert Smith and ‘Alternatives’ with an appearance by Jon Moulton of Better Capital.

Alongside the panel and presentation sessions there was also an exhibition of Guernsey’s fund industry service providers, including the Island’s leading fund administrators, custodians, legal practices and accountancy firms.

Venue

The Grange St Paul’s Hotel in London was chosen for the conference as it added gravitas and prestige to the feel of the event and was conveniently located for the target audience in the centre of the City of London.

The conference took place on a mezzanine level which ensured a dedicated area for the event and provided an excellent networking space for the exhibition and the drinks and networking reception attended by the 300 delegates.

Results

The event was a great success. The 300 guests were very impressed and the client received excellent feedback from delegates and sponsors alike.

New headquarters for Orchard

There is big news at Orchard HQ. We have a new home, a new office and a brand new space to make our own and it’s only a hop, skip and a jump away from our old premises.

The old office was pretty handy. We would chat to reporters from Channel TV while making our coffee in the morning and the BBC was just the other side of the kitchen door.

However, as the business and our expert team grew, the room became just a bit too squashed for our needs. In line with the rebranding last year, it was time to invest and inject new energy into the space in which we spend our days.

The new office is open-plan (all the better for internal communication) and large enough to accommodate our growing team and some. The Orchard personality is evident with a green and red theme and we are even cultivating an in-door lawn in the reception area.

What’s more, we are still located in the thick of the media hub, having just transported ourselves across the car park!
