When describing my job to the uninitiated it generally goes something like this:
“Writing news releases, going to photo shoots, helping out on events.”
Going to photo shoots sounds by far the most glamorous and is usually the part that people pick up on.
“You have to be in the pictures? No? Well then, what do you do?”
There’s no doubt about it; good writing is an essential skill for anybody working in PR. Starting a career in PR with limited writing skills is like bringing a knife to a gunfight; and even with a good level of experience it can be a very steep learning curve.
Christmas came early for Brooke and I this year. Five months early to be precise. Last week, we had the very exciting job of rounding up a group of Guernsey and Jersey’s finest food journalists to attend Waitrose’s Christmas press preview show in London.
All major retailers host similar events to showcase the new product ranges they will be selling in the run-up to Christmas, and while July sounds a tad early to be talking all things festive, many publications will be planning their Christmas editions months in advance.
The Commonwealth Club had been transformed into a Christmas grotto, complete with seasonal photo booth and it was crammed with journalists from across the UK all eager to learn more about the must-have foods and gifts for the 2012 festive season.
